Realization

I had a realization today. A 14 year old girl today with cystic fibrosis really changed my outlook on why I’m studying constantly and why I’m putting myself through med school in the first place. In my school, we have these patient perspectives, basically a patient comes in and talk about the disease that they have. I didn’t even know much about cystic fibrosis before today. But damn, she really hit me. These people pretty much suffers throughout their entire lives. I just couldn’t imagine going through what she was going through. She has to take 10 meds several times a day, pretty much poisoning her body to live a normal life like we do. I was surprised how she really tried hard to just live a normal life by going to school, and being in track, plays, etc. But the other people there were talking about how the life expectancy of people with cystic fibrosis is only about 30 and to get there is a constant battle of suffering. Like I couldn’t even imagine if someone said that to me, but she was sitting right there all calm and relaxed. Her mom was there and she was crying while she was telling my class of 270 people what it was like when she was born and her childhood.

This is the reason why I signed up for this.
